Modélisation du contexte des lexies spécialisées en vue de l’élaboration d’un système d’aide à la rédaction scientifique dans le domaine biomédical
2018
Abstract In this paper we propose a modeling of contextual information around a terminological unit, for the needs of a scientific writing aid tool in the biomedical field. We focus more specifically on the modeling of significant phraseic contexts that we formalize as semantically characterized argument patterns. This modeling is based on a large corpus of biomedical scientific articles and relay on semantic types specified in a domain ontology, Unified Medical Language System . Resume Dans cet article nous proposons une modelisation de l’information contextuelle autour des lexies specialisees en vue de l’elaboration d’un systeme d’aide a la redaction scientifique dans le domaine biomedica…
Proper use of medical language: Main problems and solutions
2015
[EN]: Medical language should be characterized by its precision, emotional neutrality and stability. The effective communication of results of scientific studies depends on compliance with current standards of drafting and style; texts with defects can hinder interest in the findings. In this study, we discuss some of the most common problems and errors in medical language, including the abuse of abbreviations and foreign words, the use of improper words, syntax errors and solecisms, the most common errors in titles and the abuse of capital letters and the gerund. Investigators have effective tools for dealing with these problems, such as quality texts, critical dictionaries of questions an…
Evidential al parecer: Between the physical and the cognitive meaning in Spanish scientific prose of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries
2015
Abstract Some of the evidential particles and adverbs in Spanish are believed to have developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. This also coincides with the consolidation of scientific writing in Spanish, a genre that holds a special relation with the expression of sources of information. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to study the evolution of the Spanish evidential discourse particle al parecer (‘seemingly, apparently’) in scientific texts of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Our analysis shows that in the period under review the occurrences of the evidential particle al parecer were dominant, but they were not the only uses of this construction. It coexisted…

Doing Science: Peer reviewing
2014
External peer review is a hallmark of science. “Published in a peer-reviewed journal” is a sign of quality, meaning that the work has been scrutinised by knowledgeable and independent peers. Moreover, peer review also serves the purpose of improving the work after the authors have done their best and, thus, being a reviewer carries a responsibility. However, it comes with little reward; reviewing is usually done without financial compensation and often outside of work hours. But reviewing is rewarding in itself! Besides being pro bono , it exposes you, as a reviewer, to novel findings and adds a new perspective to your own research and scientific writing. And you can add “Peer reviewer for …

Cows do not eat publications
2012
International audience; Scientific journals are facing an increasing competition directly impacting publishers and editorial boards. In addition, access to scientific information and reading patterns have deeply changed. From 2003 the journal Agronomy for Sustainable Development (ASD) has adapted its editorial policy to this highly competitive and moving environment in order to stand out and improve its impact (1). The scope, language and title of the journal were modified. A preselection step was introduced, several calls for reviews were made and spin-off books were published (2). Particular attention was given to abstracts, titles, colour figures and photos. A sister book series named Su…
